Job Description

Overview Environmental Science Lab Manager role at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, on Stanford's main campus in Stanford, California. This is a one-year fixed-term position with the possibility of renewal based on programmatic need and budgetary availability. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States and must include a resume and cover letter; we are unable to sponsor employment visas. The position supports the Pellegrini lab within the Department of Earth System Science, coordinating establishment of the Pellegrini lab at Stanford, developing analytical pipelines, coordinating permits, acquiring equipment, and organizing the lab, as well as supporting analytical work. The role involves a mix of field and laboratory measurements, operation of analytical equipment, methods development, and general project support. Responsibilities Coordinating wet lab work including purchasing and setting up equipment, designing analytical pipelines, and assisting with analyses. Designing and executing field and lab studies focused on climate change and fire. Conducting fieldwork on campaign trips to locations such as Sequoia and Kings Canyon, Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve, and Kruger National Park. Analyzing and interpreting research data for modeling and presentation. Overseeing and managing equipment for reliability. Maintaining safety standards and protocols in the lab and in the field. Specific duties may vary by department or program. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in related scientific fields, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated experience applying multidisciplinary scientific principles to experimental design and coordinating laboratory activity. Demonstrated experience with analysis and interpretation of research data and ability to recognize irregularities and invalid results. Demonstrated ability to organize data and develop models enabling integration and display of data. Basic experience with scientific software applications relevant to the job. Ability to coordinate and work with scientific or research staff and assist with technical procedures. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and to provide information to scientific and research staff. Preferred Qualifications Background or degree in Earth System Science, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related fields. Experience as a lab manager for an environmental science lab involving both field and lab work. Physical Requirements Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds; ability to work in dusty or odorous environments and to handle extended hours. Work Conditions May work extended or unusual hours based on research and project requirements. Salary The expected pay range is $38.55 to $46.68 per hour. Stanford provides pay ranges as a good faith estimate; final pay is determined based on qualifications, department budget, and market factors.
